How to get my boyfriend to care a little more?

ok well my boyfriend has been acting a little strange lately..we have been dating for 9 months and we used to fight alot but now we arent as much, we barely are now actually. my boyfriend does love me and he staright up told me "im the type of person who says they dont care when they really really do" i do believe this but when we were dating in the earlier stages he was so much different! he would even cry and ask for forgivness and he told me how much he loved me and always called me baby and said how he never wants to lose me ect.. (you get the point) lol. well of course he still tells me he loves me and i know he does. we did just have a little fight though about me getting my nose pirced and he siad this "i thought u were the old makenzie the one i feel inlove with i want that girl" and thats exactly what i was thinking about him and how i want he old him back. i said that and he said "i cant change you i wantto but i cant and you cant change me i wish we could tho" and then we made up and forgave eachother. I understand you can NOT make a person change but i do know there is a way to get them back to there old self. im cluless on where to start with this though. i dont know what to say and I need help. we have broken up 3 times but this time we r realy working and he said "i made a promise with you and im going to keep it *smile*" and that was about breaking up and i know this time we arent going to break up but i need to know if there is aything i can say to him and talk to him without setting him off. thanks(: and do NOT tell me to break up with him or to give up. i didnt ask this to get judged or told what to do i asked so i could get some advice on what to say, thanksss :)
